The Book That Will Change the World

Award Winning - Singing Through Change

My co-authors and I are thrilled to share that the book Singing Through Change: Women’s Voices in Midlife, Menopause, and Beyond received the International Impact Book Award last week!

This is a tremendous honor for us as authors, but much more importantly, it is acknowledgement of ground-breaking work in the menopause field. And that translates to Empowerment for Women!

Singing Through Change started in 2018 as a research study. Even though folk wisdom (aka fear) was common around voice changes for singers in midlife, there was shockingly little scientific, physiologic, and psychologic information known about it.

The three of us, Cate Frazier-Neely, Joanne Bozeman, and I, Nancy E Bos, went to work interviewing women in and beyond midlife to learn about their experiences, and then compared that to medical knowledge and expectations.

As a result of the astounding information we gathered, we wrote a book that moves smoothly between women's stories and science. In the book, we expose the physical changes a woman might experience and then follow it up immediately with one or more stories from the 56 women we interviewed. The stories highlight how each symptom manifested for that woman, and how she solved the issue.

The book and audiobook have been a hit! Best-selling status, 81 Amazon Customer reviews, and 4.8 out of 5 stars! People from around the world have reached out to us in gratitude, and thousands have joined our social media movements.

And this is just the beginning!

The time has come for this book to be known throughout the world. As one reviewer said, “Real, relevant information that discuss the changes women experience as we age and how it affects the voice. A must read for women AND men!”

There are at least 25,000,000 women who sing in choirs in the US (according to Chorus America). Even more women sing solo, in theater, and for fun. And of course, even more sing around the world. EVERY SINGLE ONE WILL GO THROUGH MENOPAUSE!

Our voices, along with being a means of expression and connection, are an embedded part of our identity. When they change with age and menopause it can really shake us up. There can be feelings of fear, anxiety, and shame. The stories included in this book help us know we are not alone. The stories, along with the research information that has been included, help us understand that our voices matter; both literally and metaphorically. Each singer brings her own experience of symptoms, challenges, and successes to the menopause journey. This book can help us embrace our own personal journey as a way to evolve our expression and art. Or, simply our relationship with our own voices. ~ Mary Beth Colby
